Teaching Updates + Cleanser Review: SUM:37 Skin Saver Essential Cleansing Foam

Hi again everyone! I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I last blogged!! Lots of changes since I last posted: I got a job as a French teacher, moved back in with my parents (no more schooling!), I traveled to Hong Kong, my boyfriend has moved to Ottawa to complete teacher’s college, and Theodore Macintosh Esquire passed away. Some of these changes were good, some of these changes were bad, but man, ALL OF THEM put a ย lot of stress on me and my mental state was definitely put to the test (and still is!).

However, I’ve learned a lot about myself. There are times when I have just wanted to give up completely. I stopped having lunch just to work on plans for the afternoon that I never even got to because I found my plans either weren’t suitable or my students were still working on the stuff I gave them the last week! I sometimes stayed at still until 5, and got home at 6. Running errands afterwards sometimes ran me until 7 or 8 at night! Forget about parent-teacher interviews: those sometimes lasted me until 10pm. *GASP*

But recently I’ve decided to give myself a break. School ends at 3:30pm and I’ve pretty much given myself a time limit of 4:15pm. I get out of there to be able to get home by 5. During school, I work my butt off to have stuff done for the next day. Give myself time to relax and not to stress the little things. I basically took a high school teacher’s words as my daily mantra: “Everything will eventually be ok.”

SO, because of theย change of schedule of my life, my skin took a turn for the worse. Admittedly, I skipped out on some of my routines because of pure laziness, BUT NO MORE. I’ve gotten better after my “eventually-everything-will-be-ok” revelation.

My skin looked drab and dull because of lack of sleep. The cold also made my skin super dry as well (IT’S STILL SNOWING IN APRIL. OMG CANADA.) so I decided to look up some moisturizing cleansers for sensitive skin. I decided to try out SUM:37 Skin Saver Essential Cleansing Foam. Boy, it works well!

Love the sleek looking bottle!

The bottle matches my sink!

I’ve had one too many cleansersย that made my skin feel like it was going to break. That was before I knew that moisturizing is super important! Believe it or not, I also know moisturizers that are TOO moisturizing that make me break out (like The Face Shop’s Rice Water Bright Cleansing Cream…but more on that later).

This is my first time trying SUM:37, and my first impressions are good. The cleanser comes out as a clear gel, but rub it around with a bit of water and it turns foamy. I found that pumping only a little bit is already enough for the entire face.

Comes out clear, rubs out foamy!

Comes out clear, rubs out foamy!

After washing, your face feels clean and refreshed without the feeling of flaking, dry skin. That’s all I ask…it’s not much! I’ve used this for about a month now and I will stick with the bottle until the end!

Pros:

  • Doesn’t dry out your skin,
  • Isn’t too oily
  • The price is very right! ๐Ÿ™‚ ($28 here!)
  • A little goes a long way, so you don’t need to use too much of it at once!

Cons:

  • SOMETIMES I feel a slight sting in sensitive areas, such as on pimples and blemishes, but not harsh at all in my opinion

Overall, I think it’s a great cleanser, especially for people with dry or combination skin. It cleanses well and sets your skin up well for incoming moisture!

Happy cleansing! ๐Ÿ™‚

Eyeliner Review: CLIO Waterproof Brush Liner in Kill Black

Eyeliners are tricky and it can get difficult to find the perfect one for you: Pencil or liquid? Brown, black or blue? Which brand is best?ย

First off, I’m a fan of liquid liner, hands down. For me, it lasts longer than pencil liners and also doesn’t smudge as easy (unless you decide to furiously wipe your eyes). However, I do know a friend who prefers pencil liners because it gives a nice smokey effect to your eyes when you want it, and it’s better for those with shaky hands.

Trust me though, my hands were super shaky when I first started to using liquid eyeliner and basically got some of it in my eye (it’s all good though, nothing happened!). It just takes some practice and patience. For all those beginners out there: you’ll be a liquid-liner pro in no time ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been using L’oreal Telescopic Precision Liquid Eyeliner in Black for a while from Shoppers. It’s only ok, but the tip is a bit more blunt and doesn’t dry very fast. The results aren’t bad, but be prepared to use those Q-tips. I don’t think it’s really worth the price. I was looking for something that a) dries faster and b) is precise.

I’ve read a lot of good reviews about CLIO Waterproof Brush Liner so I decided to take a shot at it. It’s actually pretty good, especially for its price (you can get it at Amazon for about $7.50)!!

The packaging is rather simple, nothing too special. The bonus about getting it is that it comes with a mascara (O’Tank Volume Mascara), so that’s a plus ๐Ÿ™‚ Gotta try that out later.

Thin tip!

Thin tip!

Once you open the cap, you’ll see a super thin tip, which I’m encouraged by. I have rather shaky hands when it comes to liquid liner, so a thinner tip means being more precise! ๐Ÿ™‚

First thing’s first: IS IT REALLY WATERPROOF??!!!

ย

Through thick and thin ;)

Through thick and thin ๐Ÿ˜‰

Just on a side note, you can see that the liner lays out pretty good thin and thick. The brush is very precise.

This is 30 seconds after I waited, put some water on it and legit rubbed it with fury. Conclusion: YES, IT’S PRETTY WATERPROOF. Of course, it’s not permanent and you can see that it’s a bit faded after a good rub, but really, would you rub your eyes that hard? No fear if you do anyway, your eyeliner will stay on ๐Ÿ˜‰ If I rubbed it the same way on my L’oreal liner, there’s no way it would’ve stayed.ย

It also looks pretty good on the eyes. I put some of the liner on one eyelid and left the other naked. Here are the results:

IMG_2300 IMG_2306IMG_2304

I like to do a double layer to make it look even darker, but this is what it looks like single layer.ย

Pros: This eyeliner is basically the best I’ve ever used so far. It’s light, precise, dries quick and won’t smudge. I’ve worn it all day today and it hasn’t worn out yet.ย

Cons: None yet!! Maybe the fact that it’s not as dark as I’d like it to be? (But I’m the type that’s like..NOTHING IS EVER DARK ENOUGH.)

Anyway, love this liner and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good liquid liner!ย

Happy lining!

Redecorating My Wall

I’ve been on Pinterest a lot lately trying to find new ways to decorate my room walls for cheap, and found a very awesome way to do it: butterflies!

My inspiration started when I saw all these free paint swatches at Home Depot and Wal-Mart. I took a stack of them home and I was thinking “there HAS to be something that I could do with these” so I started to look up some ways to use it.

I went on aย DIY internet search about paint swatches and most people seemed to use them to redecorate walls: either using them straight up as the swatches are, or cutting them into different shapes and patterns. Lots of them are really cool (check out Pinterest sometime!) and most of them aren’t costly or time consuming at all ๐Ÿ™‚

So out come the scissors! I downloaded some simple butterfly templates from Google Images, I traced them onto the paint swatches and cut them out one by one. THIS is time consuming, but that’s because I chose to not buy a $15-$20 butterfly hole punch, which would have made this a lot easier. I was really just trying to minimize the cost, and since it’s my summer break and I have some time, I decided to save a bit of money. The results were just as beautiful though!

Butterfly infestation!!

Butterfly infestation!!

Also, if you notice the white lines in the middle of each butterfly, those are the white dividers you see on the paint swatches. My boyfriend came up with the brilliant suggestion. They looked weird on the first few butterflies when I didn’t have the lines in the middle (you can kind of see them near the bottom right corner of the picture above).ย

I also want to emphasize cutting out different shapes and sizes of butterflies. Once they go up on the wall, they won’t look so monotonous ๐Ÿ˜‰

On my room wall ๐Ÿ™‚

Once I put them up on my wall, the results were amazing!! I put them in a rainbow pattern (it continues all the way to the pinks and reds) across my wall. I did buy a wall sticker decor from Wal-Mart for about $15 just to emphasize the loveliness of the butterflies and I felt like they needed a setting. The gorgeous stickers are removable and restickable too! However, feel free to not get those wall stickers. There are plenty of ways you can organize the butterflies on your wall and they’ll still look gorgeous!

Happy redecorating!

My Punta Cana Trip!!

From June 19-26, I went on a trip to Punta Cana with my wonderful boyfriend. It was one of the best vacations I’ve ever been on and my first time in the Dominican Republic (very exciting)!!

Before we left, we checked the weather for the week and it said it would basically be thundershowers every day and we were a bit like “just our luck”. But when we got there, it was sunny, blue skies, and absolutely hot. Turns out a day of “thundershower” either meant 10 minutes of heavy rain or rain in the middle of the night. This is what one of those days looks like:

Outside our resort: Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda

On top of the lovely weather we experienced, we also got an amazing hotel room:

Hehe, my boyfriend was turning on the lights.

Hehe, my boyfriend was turning on the lights.

To me, one of the best parts about this trip was the ALL-INCLUSIVE part of it. That’s right..we didn’t have to pay extra for food or drinks. We literally walked into a buffet or a restaurant, ate, and left (we were definitely nice enough to tip of course)! I steered clear of the raw stuff though (raw seafood, fruit, salad). I’ve heard way too many stories about getting super sick and I would rather not have risked it.

Most days, Hyo and I chilled at the pool and the beach. We wanted to make this vacation stress-free, so everything we did was so that we could relax and have fun at the same time.

Btw, it was supposed to "rain" that day hehe.

Btw, it was supposed to “rain” that day hehe.

ALSO, FIRST TIME WEARING A BIKINI (see my next blog post!!)

It wasn’t ALL relaxing, so we did have some fun outside of the resort! First, we did some snorkelling with sharks. Our guide Elvis was really cool. He helped us take underwater pics while we swam around (those pics need to be developed!! Will update soon!), and the sharks seemed really gentle and definitely weren’t aggressive. Really cool experience altogether!

We boated off to the middle of the ocean!!

And then we played with stingrays!

So floppy and smooth!

So floppy and smooth!

It was a perfect day to go because it was SO HOT and the water definitely cooled us down. The boat ride there was a bit long, but they made it very entertaining for everyone! The music was playing, people were dancing, and Hyo even got chosen to start the Mamajuana (Dominican’s most popular drink) shots! He got asked if he was married, and he said yes HEHE. I said no, and people started to go like “OOOOOH”. Lots of fun all in all and I would not mind doing this again sometime!! โค

The next day, we went to do an activity called Dr. Fish Ocean Spa. It was really wonderful. Long story short, you get a massage, lunch, a detoxification process, a nap in the middle of the ocean, and fish eating your dead skin all in one amazing trip!

Dr. fish nomming on our feet hehe

Some women got freaked out by the fish, but I actually found it really fun and my feet felt so smooth by the end of it all! ๐Ÿ™‚ One of my favourite parts was probably the tanning-in-the-middle-of-the-ocean part. Used LOTS of sunscreen for this though:

SO HOT YET SO COOL

SO HOT YET SO COOL

It was very literally an ocean spa ๐Ÿ˜‰

All in all, Punta Cana is a wonderful place to go if you’re looking for a relaxing vacation. There was never a dull moment and TONS of activities to choose from. Safety is generally pretty good if you stay inside the resort. If you choose to go to the beach, be very careful of people selling things to you as they could be scams (our Air Transat rep called them “sharks with feet”!). The staff there are really nice and you learn to appreciate how hard they work for very little money. And they REALLY appreciate any amount of tip (so if you ever go, tip! The service goes MUCH better when you tip). And just as a heads up: I was very worried about the Punta Cana International Airport security because I read a lot of scary theft stories online. However, I had absolutely no trouble at all leaving the country, and they actually seemed pretty lenient as far as I’m concerned. So if you’re heading there worried about security, don’t stress! Just do what you would usually do and keep your valuables on you, lock your check-in luggage. You’ll be just fine.

I’m very thankful and I feel very lucky to have gone to the Dominican Republic. I will likely go back for another relaxing trip sometime and I recommend this place to others 100%! โค

Review: Guerlain Lingerie De Peau BB Cream Review

The search for the best foundation is the most arduous to me. I needed to find something that won’t dry out my skin or make my skin too oily. I needed to find something that wouldn’t irritate my sensitive skin or change colour on me during the day. I needed to find something that’s not too light or too dark. It’s especially hard because my skin changes all year round. I found that to find the right foundation, it’s a long process of trial and error. That’s how I managed to find my current favourite: Guerlain Lingerie de Peau BB Cream.

I was walking around a drug store to look for a good foundation and since there were so many to choose from, I had to ask the beauty expert there. That’s step #1 for me: If you’re not sure, just ask. Those people are there to help you out. Just tell them about what you’re looking for, and they’ll narrow it down for you. I told my beauty expert that I was looking for something hydrating, something for sensitive skin but with good coverage and that fits my skin tone. I tried on some Clinique and Laura Mercier foundation, but my absolute favourite was the Guerlain BB Cream. When I tried it on, it had everything I was looking for in a foundation.

Look at the chic packaging!

Below you can see a picture of me without any sort of make-up, while dabbing the BB cream. Note that I don’t put ANY make-up on my forehead due to sensitivity issues (my bangs also help cover up if there are any breakouts!).

Look at that coverage!!! The redness is completely covered, and the pimples are barely noticeable anymore!

Amazing coverage!

Amazing coverage!

Covering up the redness

Covering up the redness (My lips are dry here! Make sure to use vaseline or lip gloss before going out ๐Ÿ˜‰ !)

Pros:

  • Great coverage
  • not oily
  • feels light on the skin
  • perfect for combination skin
  • SPF 30 sun protection

Cons:

  • Only 2 shades (light and medium)
  • quite pricey (bought it for $54 at Shoppers Drug Mart)

Recommendation: I would DEFINITELY recommend this foundation to those whose skin colour matches either one of the 2 shades.ย It covers well and I can barely feel it on my face (lingerie indeed!). It’s one of the best BB Creams I’ve ever tried, and I can see myself using this foundation for a while!

But of course, the best foundation for your skin is no foundation at all! Remember to let your skin breathe and don’t put on too much make up all the time!

Meet Theodore! + other updates

As I have been busy with teacher’s college, I haven’t been really able to update my blog and I’m so so sad about it! But I’m ready to take it on again since things have been settling down into a routine. Next up, I’m going to let you all know about my favourite foundation! Stay tuned ๐Ÿ˜‰

In other news, here is my hamster, Theodore Macintosh Esquire. He’s about 8 inches big and very social! Love him to death:

Outfit of the Day!

Outfit of the Day!

This evening, I’m wearing a simple dress that features a black top and a denim skirt. To match, I’m bringing a black and white purse and a black lop-sided fedora (I’m not sure what to actually call this hat!).

First off, I really enjoy one-piece-dress-looking-like-two-pieces dresses. They are especially great for people who are under time constraints and can’t piece together an outfit fast enough before rushing off!

Also, never underestimate the power of colour blocking: the black and white colour blocking on this purse gave my outfit that straight-forward effortless look I was going for. Absolutely love beauty in simplicity!!

Now off to go with my boyfriend to Moxie’s! Have a wonderful evening everyone!
